Treaty of Rapallo

The 1922 treaty between Germany and Soviet Russia restored diplomatic relations, renounced mutual financial claims, and opened the way for economic cooperation.

Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty that imposed territorial, military, and financial terms on Germany after World War I. Germany’s isolation under the postwar settlement made an agreement with Soviet Russia attractive.
Diplomatic recognition: A state’s formal acknowledgment of another government as legitimate and entitled to conduct official relations. The treaty restored official relations between Germany and Soviet Russia.
Georgy Chicherin: A Soviet diplomat who served as foreign commissar from 1918 to 1930. He represented Soviet Russia at Genoa and signed the treaty for his government.

Most-favored-nation treatment: A trade principle requiring a state to extend specified advantages to one partner if it grants them to another. The agreement provided for reciprocal trade treatment on this basis.
