Treaty of Trianon

The 1920 peace treaty between Hungary and the Allied powers that ended their state of war and redrew Hungary’s borders after the First World War.

Kingdom of Hungary: The historic Hungarian state that existed in several constitutional forms before its dissolution in 1918. The treaty reduced this state's territory and population to a fraction of its prewar extent.
Paris Peace Conference: The 1919–1920 negotiations in which the Allied powers shaped peace settlements after the First World War. The conference produced the terms presented to Hungary at Trianon.
Dissolution of Austria-Hungary: The breakup of the Habsburg monarchy into successor states at the end of the First World War. Its collapse left Hungary's borders and sovereignty to be settled by the victorious powers.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty between Germany and the Allied powers after the First World War. It was the better-known German settlement, while Trianon imposed a separate peace on Hungary.
Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye: The 1919 peace treaty that formally dissolved Austria-Hungary's Austrian half and set Austria's postwar borders. It settled Austria's side of the empire's breakup alongside Hungary's settlement at Trianon.
Grand Trianon: A palace at Versailles where the treaty with Hungary was signed on 4 June 1920. Its name identifies the site where Hungarian and Allied representatives signed the treaty.
Aster Revolution: The October 1918 Hungarian revolution that brought Mihály Károlyi to power and ended Habsburg rule in Hungary. It preceded Hungary's independence and the unstable postwar negotiations.
Hungarian Red Map: A 1919 ethnographic map by Pál Teleki that used red to mark Hungarian-majority areas within the Kingdom of Hungary. Hungarian negotiators used it to argue against borders they considered unjust.
Hungarian irredentism: Political advocacy for restoring territories lost by Hungary after the First World War. Revision of Trianon's borders became a central aim of interwar Hungarian politics.
Hungarian delegation to the Paris Peace Conference: The Hungarian representatives who presented their government's case during the postwar peace negotiations. The delegation opposed proposed territorial losses but could not secure major revisions.
