Treaty of Yandabo

The 1826 treaty that ended the First Anglo-Burmese War. Burma ceded territories to Britain and agreed to pay an indemnity.

First Anglo-Burmese War: A war between the Konbaung dynasty of Burma and the British East India Company from 1824 to 1826. The treaty ended this war after British forces advanced to Yandabo.
War indemnity: A payment imposed on a defeated state to compensate a victor for the costs of war. Burma was required to pay a large indemnity as a condition of peace.
Konbaung dynasty: The last dynasty to rule Burma, from 1752 until the British annexation of the kingdom in 1885. The dynasty signed the treaty after its forces lost the war.
Archibald Campbell: A British army officer who commanded forces in the First Anglo-Burmese War and negotiated the Treaty of Yandabo. Campbell negotiated the agreement on behalf of the British side.
Arakan: A coastal region in western Myanmar, historically known as Arakan. The treaty ceded Arakan to Britain, beginning a period of British rule there.
British East India Company: A chartered company that governed much of the Indian subcontinent and conducted trade from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. The company’s forces fought Burma, and its government enforced the treaty’s terms.
Bagyidaw: King of Burma from 1819 to 1837, during the First Anglo-Burmese War and its aftermath. Bagyidaw’s government accepted the treaty’s terms following the military defeat.
Treaty of Yandabo negotiations: The negotiations between British and Burmese representatives that produced the 1826 peace agreement. The negotiations turned battlefield defeat into specific territorial and financial obligations.
Tenasserim: A long coastal region in southeastern Myanmar and southern Thailand. The treaty transferred Tenasserim to Britain along with other Burmese territories.
British India: The territories of the Indian subcontinent governed by Britain, directly or through princely states, from 1858 to 1947. The treaty extended the company’s northeastern frontier and strategic reach from British India.
