Tuskegee Syphilis Study

A U.S. Public Health Service study in Alabama from 1932 to 1972 observed syphilis in Black men without informed consent and withheld effective treatment.

Macón County, Alabama: A county in central Alabama that was the setting for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The study recruited participants from this county’s Black community.
Walter Reed Yellow Fever Commission: A U.S. Army commission that investigated yellow fever transmission in Cuba in 1900. Its use of consent forms became an earlier precedent for human-subject research in the federal service.
Taliaferro Clark: A U.S. Public Health Service physician who helped initiate the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. He proposed the study and directed its early phase.
