Ubaid period

The Ubaid period was a prehistoric era in southern Mesopotamia, roughly 6500–3800 BCE, marked by distinctive painted pottery, farming settlements, and expanding social complexity.

Ubaid pottery: A tradition of wheel-made or handmade ceramics, often painted with dark geometric designs, associated with Ubaid communities. Its recurring forms and decoration provide the period’s clearest archaeological signature.
Farming in ancient Mesopotamia: The cultivation of crops and raising of livestock in Mesopotamia’s varied landscapes. Crop and herd management supported increasingly permanent Ubaid settlements.

Tell al-Ubaid: An archaeological site near Ur in southern Iraq that gave the Ubaid period its name. Excavations there established the archaeological sequence behind the period’s modern label.
Southern Mesopotamia: The alluvial plain around the lower Tigris and Euphrates rivers in present-day Iraq. This region was the Ubaid period’s core, where farming communities expanded across the plain.
Craft specialization: The concentration of particular skills or production tasks among specific people or groups. Distinctive pottery and other crafts point to increasingly organized production.
