Uffizi Gallery

An art museum in Florence housed in a building commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici for Florentine government offices. Its collections are especially known for Italian Renaissance painting.

The Birth of Venus: Sandro Botticelli’s painting of Venus emerging from the sea, created in the mid-1480s. This Uffizi masterpiece helped make Botticelli’s mythological painting central to the museum’s identity.
Cosimo I de' Medici: The first grand duke of Tuscany, who ruled Florence from 1537 to 1569. He commissioned the Uffizi building to centralize the offices of Florentine government.
