Ugarit

Ugarit was a Bronze Age port city on the Syrian coast, flourishing in the second millennium BCE. Its archives preserve a major corpus of alphabetic texts, and its trade linked the Levant with the wider eastern Mediterranean.

Ugaritic alphabet: A cuneiform alphabet of about thirty signs used chiefly to write the Ugaritic language. This distinctive writing system appears throughout Ugarit’s administrative and literary archives.
Ugarit trade: The exchange of goods through Ugarit’s port and overland routes during the Bronze Age. Trade made the coastal city a junction between inland Syria and Mediterranean networks.
Baal Cycle: A cycle of Ugaritic poems about the storm god Baal and his conflicts with other deities. This literary work is among the best-known texts recovered from Ugarit.
Bronze Age collapse: The widespread disruption of eastern Mediterranean societies around the end of the Late Bronze Age. Ugarit’s destruction is one of the clearest archaeological episodes within this wider crisis.
Sea Peoples: A group of maritime raiders and migrants named in Egyptian and eastern Mediterranean sources around 1200 BCE. They are often linked to Ugarit’s destruction, though the evidence does not settle who attacked it.
Ugaritic language: A Northwest Semitic language known mainly from texts excavated at Ugarit. Its tablets reveal the language spoken and written in the city.
Ugaritic texts: Texts from Ugarit written in Ugaritic and other languages on clay tablets and objects. The city’s scribes recorded local affairs alongside foreign correspondence and literature.
Epic of Kirta: An Ugaritic epic poem about King Kirta’s family, grief, and restoration. Its surviving tablets show the city’s scribes preserving royal narrative poetry.
Ugarit destruction: The violent destruction of Ugarit near the end of the Late Bronze Age, around 1200 BCE. The city was abandoned after this event and never rebuilt as a major center.
Late Bronze Age trade networks: Long-distance systems that moved goods, people, and information among eastern Mediterranean states. Ugarit’s varied imported objects and foreign records help trace these networks and their disruption.
