Ukiyo-e

Ukiyo-e is a Japanese art genre that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries, depicting subjects such as urban life, actors, courtesans, and landscapes in paintings and woodblock prints.

Japanese woodblock printing: A printmaking process in which carved wooden blocks transfer ink to paper, often using separate blocks for different colors. The process made ukiyo-e prints reproducible and enabled complex color images.
Hishikawa Moronobu: A Japanese artist of the 17th century associated with establishing ukiyo-e as a distinct style. His printed book illustrations and images helped shape the genre’s early visual language.
Suzuki Harunobu: An 18th-century Japanese artist known for pioneering full-color ukiyo-e prints. His work helped establish nishiki-e as a major form of ukiyo-e.
The Great Wave off Kanagawa: A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, part of his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. It combines the genre’s landscape imagery with bold composition and Mount Fuji’s presence.
Japonisme: The influence of Japanese art and design on Western artists and decorative arts, especially in the late 19th century. Ukiyo-e prints were a major source of Japanese imagery and compositional ideas in Europe.
Nishiki-e: A Japanese multicolor woodblock-printing technique developed in the 18th century. It expanded ukiyo-e from hand-colored prints into richly layered color compositions.
Nishimura Shigenaga: An 18th-century Japanese ukiyo-e artist associated with the development of multicolor printing. His work belongs to the transition toward more elaborate color-print production.
Kitagawa Utamaro: A Japanese ukiyo-e artist celebrated for prints of women and close-up portraits. His portraits made the psychology and appearance of urban women central to the genre.
Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji: A series of landscape prints by Katsushika Hokusai, published around 1830–1832. The series shows how ukiyo-e artists varied one landmark across seasons and settings.
Impressionism: A 19th-century art movement that emphasized modern life, changing light, and visible brushwork. Some Impressionist artists collected Japanese prints and explored related cropping and asymmetrical composition.
