Ukiyo-zōshi

Ukiyo-zōshi is a genre of Japanese prose fiction published from the late seventeenth to early eighteenth centuries. Its stories depict contemporary urban life, commercial culture, and the pleasure quarters.

Kana-zōshi: Early Japanese prose fiction written primarily in kana, published from the seventeenth century. This earlier prose tradition supplied forms and audiences that ukiyo-zōshi developed.
Japanese book publishing in the Edo period: The commercial production and sale of books in Japan under Tokugawa rule. Publishers and booksellers circulated ukiyo-zōshi to a growing urban readership.
Ihara Saikaku: A Japanese writer of the seventeenth century, best known for prose fiction about urban life and money. His works helped establish ukiyo-zōshi as a recognizable literary genre.
The Life of an Amorous Man: A 1682 prose work by Ihara Saikaku about the amorous adventures of a man across his life. Its episodic account of pleasure-seeking became a foundational model for the genre.
Jōruri: A Japanese narrative tradition performed with musical accompaniment, often using puppets. Unlike jōruri’s performed narratives, ukiyo-zōshi was composed for reading.
Ukiyo: A cultural ideal of transient worldly pleasure associated with urban life in early modern Japan. The genre takes its name and much of its subject matter from this urban ideal.
Edo-period book formats: The physical formats and binding styles used for books in early modern Japan. Their small, portable volumes suited the genre’s market and modes of reading.
Nishizawa Ippū: A Japanese writer associated with popular prose fiction in the early eighteenth century. His writing extended the genre’s comic and topical treatment of contemporary society.
The Life of an Amorous Woman: A prose work by Ihara Saikaku narrated by an elderly woman recalling her erotic life. Its female protagonist recasts the genre’s exploration of desire and social status.
Kabuki: A Japanese theatrical form combining acting, dance, music, and stylized staging. Kabuki dramatized urban entertainment onstage, while ukiyo-zōshi narrated it in prose.
