Nationalism : A political idea and movement that treats the nation as a central source of identity and political legitimacy. Ultranationalism intensifies nationalism by placing national interests above competing claims.
Scapegoating : The practice of assigning blame for complex problems to a person or group with limited power. Ultranationalist leaders can blame internal minorities for national decline or hardship.
Fascism : An authoritarian ultranationalist political ideology that rejects liberal democracy and emphasizes national rebirth and hierarchy. Fascist movements made national rebirth, obedience, and political violence central to their programs.
Civic nationalism : Nationalism that defines membership through shared citizenship and political principles rather than ancestry. Its inclusive basis of membership contrasts with ultranationalist exclusion by ancestry or identity.
Ethnic cleansing : The forced removal of an ethnic or religious group from a territory through violence, intimidation, or other coercion. Ultranationalist projects may seek to make territory conform to an imagined national identity.
Nation : A community understood as sharing a history, culture, political identity, or claim to self-government. Ultranationalist politics defines who belongs to the nation and whose interests it elevates.
Propaganda : Organized communication designed to shape beliefs and behavior in support of a political cause. It spreads claims about national greatness, enemies, and the need for obedience.
Nazism : The German totalitarian movement led by Adolf Hitler, combining racial antisemitism, dictatorship, and expansionist nationalism. It offers an extreme historical case of ultranationalism joined to racial hierarchy and conquest.
Patriotism : Affection for one's country, often expressed through attachment to its people, institutions, or traditions. Patriotism need not assert national superiority or demand hostility toward outsiders.
Genocide : Acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. In some historical cases, ultranationalist exclusion has escalated into attempts to destroy targeted groups.
