Ussuri River

The Ussuri is a river in northeastern Asia that forms part of the Russia–China border before joining the Amur near Khabarovsk.

Amur River: A major river in northeastern Asia that flows eastward to the Sea of Okhotsk. The Ussuri joins the Amur near Khabarovsk, contributing water to its lower course.
Treaty of Aigun: A 1858 treaty that transferred territory north of the Amur from Qing China to the Russian Empire. It established the Amur as a boundary and preceded the settlement of the Ussuri frontier.
Damansky Island: A small island in the Ussuri River known in China as Zhenbao Island. The island became the focal point of deadly Sino-Soviet clashes in 1969.
Siberian tiger: The largest living tiger subspecies, native to the Russian Far East and northeastern China. The Ussuri basin includes habitat used by this endangered tiger.
Sungacha River: A river connecting Lake Khanka with the Ussuri River along the Russia–China border. It is the Ussuri’s principal outlet from Lake Khanka.
Convention of Peking: A 1860 agreement that confirmed Russian territorial gains from Qing China and defined parts of their border. It placed the Ussuri region within the frontier framework that persists today.
Sino-Soviet border conflict: A series of armed confrontations between China and the Soviet Union, especially in 1969. Its best-known fighting took place on an island in the Ussuri.
Land of the Leopard National Park: A protected area in Russia’s Primorsky Krai established to conserve the Amur leopard and its habitat. It protects ecosystems in the broader Ussuri region.
Lake Khanka: A large freshwater lake on the Russia–China border in the Ussuri basin. Its waters reach the Ussuri through the Sungacha River.
Outer Manchuria: A historical region transferred from Qing China to the Russian Empire through nineteenth-century treaties. The Ussuri runs through territory shaped by this transfer.
