Uthman ibn Affan

Uthman ibn Affan was the third caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate, ruling from 644 to 656. His reign saw the standardization of the Quranic text and ended with his assassination.

Rashidun Caliphate: The early Islamic state ruled by Muhammad’s successors from 632 to 661. Uthman ruled its third caliphate, during rapid expansion and mounting political strain.
Succession to Muhammad: The political and religious dispute over leadership of the Muslim community after Muhammad’s death in 632. Uthman’s caliphate emerged from this unresolved question of leadership.
Umayyad dynasty: A ruling dynasty that governed the caliphate from 661 to 750 and founded the Umayyad caliphate. Uthman belonged to the Umayyad clan, whose members gained prominent positions during his reign.
Siege of Uthman: The 656 siege of Uthman’s residence in Medina by rebels opposing his rule. The siege culminated in Uthman’s assassination and the collapse of his caliphate.

Shia Islam: A major branch of Islam that holds Ali and his descendants had the strongest claim to leadership after Muhammad. Shia historical memory places Uthman’s caliphate within disputes over Ali’s rightful leadership.
