Uthmanic codex

The standardized written form of the Quran associated with Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, traditionally linked to official copies sent to major Muslim centers and the suppression of variant codices.

Uthman ibn Affan: The third caliph of the early Muslim community, who ruled from 644 to 656. Tradition credits Uthman with ordering the Quran’s official standardization.
Quranic rasm: The consonantal framework of the Quranic text as transmitted in early manuscripts. The Uthmanic standard is principally identified with a shared rasm.
Birmingham Quran manuscript: A parchment fragment bearing Quranic text, radiocarbon dated to a range spanning the early Islamic period. Its early date makes it relevant to the formation and transmission of the Uthmanic text.
Uthmanic script: The early Arabic script tradition used in manuscripts associated with the Uthmanic Quranic text. The standard’s consonantal form was copied in early Arabic manuscript scripts.
Battle of al-Yamama: A battle in 632 in which many Quran reciters were reportedly killed. The reported losses prompted concern about preserving Quranic material in written form.
Qira'at: Recognized traditions of Quranic recitation that preserve differences in pronunciation and, sometimes, wording. Multiple readings developed within the framework of the standardized consonantal text.
Topkapi Quran manuscript: An early Quran manuscript kept at the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul. It has sometimes been identified with an original Uthmanic copy, a claim not established by evidence.
Cairo Quran edition: A widely influential printed Quran edition published in Cairo in 1924. Its chosen reading and standardized typography reflect the long legacy of a shared written text.
Zayd ibn Thabit: A companion of Muhammad traditionally described as a Quran scribe and compiler. Traditions name Zayd as a leading member of the committee preparing the standard text.
Arabic diacritics: Marks added to Arabic writing to distinguish consonants and indicate short vowels. Early codices generally lacked the fully developed marks that later guided reading.
