Knowra Vaginitis Vaginitis Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina that can cause discharge, itching, irritation, or pain. It has infectious and noninfectious causes, which require different treatments.
Bacterial vaginosis : A vaginal condition involving altered microbial communities and often thin discharge and a fishy odor. It can cause vaginitis-like discharge, though it is not usually marked by intense inflammation.
Vaginal discharge : Fluid produced by vaginal and cervical secretions, whose amount and character can vary with health and hormones. Its color, odor, and consistency can help characterize vaginitis but do not diagnose its cause alone.
Antifungal medication : Medication that treats fungal infections by killing fungi or limiting their growth. Antifungals treat confirmed or clinically diagnosed Candida-related vaginitis.
Vulvitis : Inflammation of the vulva, the external genital structures. Vulvar inflammation can cause itching and soreness without inflammation centered in the vagina.
Vulvovaginal candidiasis : A fungal infection, usually caused by Candida albicans, affecting the vulva and vagina. Candida overgrowth is a common infectious cause of vaginal itching and irritation.
Vaginal pH : A measure of how acidic or alkaline vaginal fluid is. An elevated pH can support some diagnoses, while remaining insufficient by itself to identify a cause.
Metronidazole : An antimicrobial drug used against certain anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is a standard treatment option for bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis.
Cervicitis : Inflammation of the uterine cervix, often associated with infection or irritation. Cervical inflammation can cause discharge or bleeding that resembles vaginitis.
Trichomoniasis : A sexually transmitted infection caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. This infection can inflame the vagina and cause discharge, irritation, or pain.
Wet mount : Microscopic examination of a fresh specimen suspended in liquid. A vaginal wet mount can reveal yeast, motile trichomonads, or clue cells.
