Vitus Bering

Vitus Bering (1681–1741) was a Danish-born explorer and naval officer in Russian service who led two major expeditions across the North Pacific. The Bering Strait and Bering Sea bear his name.

First Kamchatka Expedition: A Russian expedition led by Vitus Bering from 1725 to 1730 to investigate whether Asia and North America were connected. Bering led this first voyage across Siberia to the Pacific coast.
Russian Empire: A state that expanded across Eurasia from 1721 to 1917, governed by the Russian emperor. Bering's expeditions were state-sponsored efforts to map and claim Russia's Pacific frontier.
Peter the Great: The Russian tsar and emperor who ruled from 1682 to 1725 and pursued military, administrative, and maritime reforms. Peter ordered the first expedition to investigate the boundary between Asia and America.

Aleksei Chirikov: A Russian naval officer and explorer who commanded a separate ship during the Second Kamchatka Expedition and reached North America in 1741. As Bering's deputy, Chirikov commanded one of the expedition's two ships.
Russian colonization of Alaska: The expansion of Russian settlements and commerce in Alaska, beginning with eighteenth-century maritime expeditions and fur trading. The voyage's reports and collected specimens encouraged later Russian ventures to Alaska.
James Cook: A British naval captain and explorer whose Pacific voyages mapped coastlines and expanded European geographic knowledge in the eighteenth century. Cook's later northern Pacific voyage revisited questions Bering's expeditions had addressed.
