Voivodeship

A top-level administrative division in Poland and several other Central and Eastern European countries, broadly comparable to a province or region.

Voivode: A government-appointed official who represents a national government in a voivodeship. The voivode supervises the legality of local government and represents Poland’s central administration in each region.
Partitions of Poland: The late-eighteenth-century division of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. The partitioning powers imposed different administrative systems on lands later included in Polish voivodeships.
Oblast: A major administrative division used in several countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Oblasts are a neighboring regional model, but the term and institutional arrangements vary by country.
NUTS statistical regions of Poland: The European Union’s statistical classification of Polish territory into hierarchical regional units. Polish voivodeships serve as NUTS 2 regions, a level used for comparable European statistics.
Voivodeship of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A historical territorial unit of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, with boundaries and functions distinct from modern regions. The historical voivodeship was part of a noble-led commonwealth, not today’s administrative system.
Voivodeship sejmik: The elected regional assembly that sets policy and budgets in a Polish voivodeship. Its elected members make regional decisions distinct from the voivode’s central-government role.
Second Polish Republic: The Polish state that existed between the world wars, from 1918 to 1939. Interwar Poland organized its territory into voivodeships, reviving the administrative term after independence.
Krai: A type of federal subject used in Russia and a few other former Soviet states. Krai is a regional designation in a federal system, unlike Poland’s unitary-state voivodeship.
European Regional Development Fund: An EU fund that supports regional development and reduces economic disparities between regions. Voivodeships help organize regional planning and the allocation of European development funding.
Polish voivodeship: A modern Polish region forming the country’s highest subnational administrative tier. Poland’s 16 units provide the contemporary model most often meant by the term.
