Volt

The volt is the SI derived unit of electric potential difference and electromotive force. One volt equals one joule per coulomb.

Electric potential difference: The change in electric potential energy per unit charge between two points. A volt is the unit used to quantify this difference.
Ohm's law: The relation stating that voltage across an ohmic conductor equals current through it multiplied by its resistance. It relates voltage in volts to current in amperes and resistance in ohms.
Voltmeter: An instrument that measures electric potential difference between two points. Its scale reports the quantity in volts.
Alessandro Volta: An Italian physicist whose invention of the voltaic pile established a practical source of continuous electric current. The volt is named in his honor.
Ampere: The SI base unit of electric current. Voltage measures energy per charge, whereas amperes measure charge flow per time.
Electric charge: A physical property of matter that causes it to experience electromagnetic forces. The coulomb in the volt's joule-per-coulomb definition measures charge.
Electrical resistance: A measure of how strongly a material or component opposes electric current. Resistance relates a component's voltage to its current under Ohm's law.
Digital multimeter: An electronic instrument that measures quantities such as voltage, current, and resistance. Its voltage mode measures potential difference across circuit points.
Voltaic pile: An early electric battery made from alternating metal discs separated by electrolyte-soaked material. Volta's pile made sustained electrical potential differences experimentally accessible.
Watt: The SI derived unit of power, equal to one joule per second. A watt measures energy transfer per time, not potential difference.
