Volumetric flow rate

Volumetric flow rate is the volume of fluid passing through a cross-section per unit time. It describes how much space a flowing fluid occupies as it moves.

Continuity equation: An equation expressing conservation of mass in a flowing fluid. For incompressible flow, it makes volumetric flow rate constant along a streamtube.
Discharge (hydrology): The volume of water flowing through a river cross-section per unit time. River discharge is volumetric flow rate applied to an open channel.
Volume: The three-dimensional space occupied by a substance or object. Volumetric flow rate tracks transported volume rather than transported mass.
Velocity: The rate and direction of change of an object's position. Velocity describes local motion; volumetric flow rate aggregates normal velocity across an area.
Mean velocity: The average velocity of fluid across a specified cross-section. Multiplying it by cross-sectional area gives volumetric flow rate.
Flow meter: An instrument that measures the rate or amount of fluid moving through a system. Flow meters report or infer volumetric flow rate in pipes and process systems.
Time: A physical quantity that orders events and measures their durations. The denominator specifies how quickly volume crosses the section.
Specific discharge: Volumetric flow rate per unit cross-sectional area, commonly used in porous media and hydrology. It normalizes flow rate by area, yielding a flux-like quantity.
Cross-sectional area: The area of a shape cut by a plane perpendicular to a chosen direction. At a given mean velocity, a larger section carries a proportionally larger volume per time.
Venturi effect: The change in fluid pressure and speed as flow passes through a constricted section. Venturi meters use the pressure change to infer the volume passing per unit time.
