Water pump

A machine that moves water by adding energy to it, typically by increasing its pressure or imparting motion.

Centrifugal pump: A pump that uses a rotating impeller to impart velocity to liquid, which a casing converts into pressure. Its impeller-driven flow is the standard example of a dynamic water pump.
Fluid pressure: The force exerted per unit area by a fluid on surfaces in contact with it. A pump raises water pressure to drive flow through pipes and against resistance.
Municipal water supply: The infrastructure that treats and distributes potable water to communities. Pumping stations move treated water through distribution networks and into storage.
Gravity-fed water supply: A water-delivery system that uses elevation differences rather than powered pumping to create flow and pressure. It can move water without a pump when the source is sufficiently elevated.
Positive-displacement pump: A pump that moves fluid by repeatedly trapping and displacing fixed or variable volumes. It moves water in measured volumes rather than relying on continuous impeller flow.
Volumetric flow rate: The volume of fluid passing a point per unit time. It measures how much water a pump delivers over time.
Irrigation: The artificial application of water to land or crops. Pumps lift or convey water from rivers, wells, and reservoirs to fields.
Jet pump: A pump that uses a high-velocity fluid jet to entrain and move another fluid. It can lift water from wells but generally uses more energy than a comparable submersible pump.
Impeller: A rotating component with vanes that transfers energy to a fluid. In a centrifugal pump, this rotating part accelerates the water.
Static head: The vertical difference between a fluid source and its discharge point, expressed as fluid-column height. The elevation difference sets part of the head the pump must supply.
