Vsevolod Meyerhold

Vsevolod Meyerhold (1874–1940) was a Russian and Soviet theater director, actor, and theorist. His biomechanics training and constructivist staging reshaped avant-garde theater.

Theatrical biomechanics: Meyerhold’s actor-training system organizes movement into precise, economical, expressive sequences. This training system made the actor’s body the central instrument of his theatrical method.
Moscow Art Theatre: A Moscow theater company founded in 1898 by Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. Meyerhold began his professional acting career with the company and later broke from its naturalism.
Vladimir Mayakovsky: A Russian and Soviet poet and playwright associated with Futurism and revolutionary art. Meyerhold staged Mayakovsky’s plays, including The Bedbug and The Bathhouse.

The Government Inspector: A satirical play by Nikolai Gogol about corruption in a provincial Russian town. Meyerhold’s 1926 staging reworked Gogol through stylized acting and an elaborate, nonrealistic design.
Biomechanics: The study of mechanical principles in living bodies and their movement. Meyerhold borrowed this scientific term for actor training, giving it a distinct theatrical meaning.
