Wallachia

Wallachia was a principality north of the lower Danube, founded in the medieval period and later incorporated into Romania. Its rulers balanced local autonomy against Ottoman, Hungarian, and other regional powers.

Basarab I: Basarab I was a ruler of Wallachia who established its independence from the Kingdom of Hungary in the fourteenth century. His victory over Charles I of Hungary helped secure Wallachia’s status as a principality.
Ottoman suzerainty: A relationship in which a ruler retains local authority while acknowledging a stronger state’s supremacy and obligations. It describes the constrained autonomy Wallachia maintained under Ottoman power.
