War of 1812

A war fought from 1812 to 1815 between the United States and Britain, including British North American colonies, with Indigenous nations participating on both sides.

Invasion of Canada: A series of United States military campaigns into British North America during the War of 1812. U.S. leaders expected conquest of Canada to pressure Britain, but the campaigns repeatedly failed.
Impressment: The practice of forcing people into military or naval service, especially the British seizure of sailors for the Royal Navy. British impressment of U.S. sailors became a prominent grievance behind the declaration of war.
James Madison: The fourth president of the United States, serving from 1809 to 1817. Madison asked Congress to declare war and led the country through its uncertain campaigns.
Hartford Convention: A meeting of New England Federalists in 1814–1815 to discuss opposition to the War of 1812 and proposed constitutional changes. Its timing and demands damaged the Federalist Party’s standing after peace arrived.

Isaac Brock: A British Army officer and administrator who commanded forces in Upper Canada at the start of the war. His leadership helped capture Detroit and strengthen British resistance in Canada before his death at Queenston Heights.
Era of Good Feelings: A period of reduced party conflict and strong nationalism in the United States, commonly associated with James Monroe’s presidency. The war’s end encouraged national unity and weakened the Federalists, though political divisions persisted.
Battle of the Thames: An 1813 battle in Upper Canada where U.S. forces defeated British and Indigenous forces, including Tecumseh’s confederacy. Tecumseh’s death weakened Indigenous resistance in the Old Northwest.
Chesapeake–Leopard affair: An 1807 naval confrontation in which HMS Leopard attacked USS Chesapeake and removed alleged deserters. The attack inflamed U.S. anger over British interference with American ships and sailors.
