War of the Breton Succession

A dynastic conflict over the Duchy of Brittany, fought from 1341 to 1364 between rival claimants and intertwined with the Hundred Years’ War.

John III, Duke of Brittany: Duke of Brittany from 1312 until his death in 1341, whose childless death triggered a succession dispute. His death left no direct heir and opened the rival claims to the duchy.
John IV, Duke of Brittany: Duke of Brittany from 1365, son of John of Montfort and the eventual victor's successor. His accession under the name John IV formalized the Montfort triumph.
Duchy of Brittany: A medieval duchy in northwestern France, ruled by its own dynasty under the French crown's overlordship. Control of this strategically placed duchy was the prize contested in the war.

Siege of Rennes (1341–1342): A siege during which Charles of Blois's forces captured Rennes from John of Montfort's supporters. The city changed hands early in the struggle for control of Brittany.
Charles of Blois: A French noble who claimed the Duchy of Brittany through his wife, Joan of Penthièvre. His claim received French backing and opposed John of Montfort's bid.
Philip VI of France: King of France from 1328 to 1350 and the first Valois monarch. He supported Charles of Blois, linking the Breton dispute to French royal policy.
