War of the Pacific

The 1879–1884 war in which Chile fought Peru and Bolivia over territory and resources along South America’s Pacific coast. Chile’s victory reshaped the region’s borders and left Bolivia landlocked.

Atacama Desert: A hyperarid plateau and coastal desert spanning parts of Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Its mineral-rich eastern margin became the central zone of territorial competition.
Battle of Iquique: An 1879 naval battle in which Chilean and Peruvian ships fought off the port of Iquique. Its outcome became an early symbol of the conflict and helped shape the naval campaign.
Arturo Prat: A Chilean naval officer killed while commanding the corvette Esmeralda at the Battle of Iquique. His death became a lasting Chilean national symbol during the war.
Treaty of Ancón: The 1883 treaty that ended hostilities between Chile and Peru and ceded Tarapacá to Chile. It formalized Peru’s territorial losses while leaving Tacna and Arica’s status unresolved.
Nitratine: A naturally occurring sodium nitrate mineral, historically mined as a source of fertilizer and explosives. Nitrate deposits in the disputed territory made control economically valuable.
Battle of Angamos: An 1879 naval engagement in which Chile captured the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar. The capture gave Chile control of the sea, enabling its subsequent landings.
Miguel Grau Seminario: A Peruvian admiral who commanded the ironclad Huáscar and was killed at Angamos in 1879. His naval campaign delayed Chilean control of the sea and earned respect from both sides.
Treaty of Valparaíso: The 1884 truce that ended active hostilities between Chile and Bolivia. It placed Bolivia’s coastal territory under Chilean control pending a final settlement.
Treaty of Boundary of 1874: An agreement between Chile and Bolivia that fixed their boundary and restricted Bolivia from increasing taxes on Chilean companies for 25 years. Bolivia’s 1878 tax on a Chilean company challenged this treaty’s restriction.
Huáscar: A Peruvian ironclad warship captured by Chile at the Battle of Angamos in 1879. Its capture ended Peru’s effective challenge to Chilean command of the sea.
