Web application

A web application is software hosted on a web server and used over a network, typically through a web browser. It combines server-side behavior with an interface delivered to client devices.

HTTP: The application-layer protocol used to transfer web resources between clients and servers. Browsers and web servers use HTTP to exchange requests and responses.
HTML: The markup language that structures content in web documents. Web application interfaces commonly use HTML to define their elements and content.
Single-page application: A web application that updates much of its interface within one loaded document. This architecture keeps interactions fluid by shifting more rendering work into the browser.
Native application: Software built for and installed on a particular operating system or device platform. Unlike a typical web application, it runs as platform-specific software rather than chiefly through a browser.
Web browser: Software that retrieves and presents web content and can execute client-side code. It renders the interface and mediates a user's interaction with many web applications.
Cascading Style Sheets: A style sheet language that controls the presentation of HTML and other document formats. CSS shapes the layout and visual appearance of browser-based application interfaces.
Progressive web app: A web application designed to provide app-like capabilities through browser technologies. Its installability and offline features extend a web application's use beyond a typical page.
Desktop application: Software installed and run on a personal computer's operating system. Its installation and local execution contrast with the hosted access typical of web applications.
Client–server model: A computing architecture in which clients request services or resources from servers. Web applications commonly divide interface work between a client and a server.
Web API: An interface that lets software communicate with a web service over a network. Applications use web APIs to connect their interfaces to server-side capabilities.
