White Sea–Baltic Canal

The White Sea–Baltic Canal is a waterway in northwestern Russia linking the White Sea to Lake Onega and, through connected waterways, the Baltic Sea. Built largely by forced labor, it opened in 1933.

Lake Onega: A large lake in northwestern Russia, connected to the White Sea–Baltic Canal and the Baltic waterway network. The canal’s southern end opens into Lake Onega, its gateway toward the Baltic.
Gulag: The Soviet system of forced-labor camps that operated from the 1930s through the 1950s. The canal was built chiefly by prisoners within this system.
Matvei Berman: A Soviet security official who led the Gulag administration and oversaw major forced-labor projects. He was among the senior officials responsible for organizing the canal’s construction.
Forced labor in the Soviet Union: Coerced labor imposed by Soviet authorities on prisoners and other groups for state projects and production. Prisoners performed most of the canal’s construction under coercive conditions.
Volga–Don Canal: A canal opened in 1952 linking the Volga and Don rivers in southwestern Russia. Unlike this later canal, it connects two major river basins and permits larger vessels.
White Sea: An inlet of the Barents Sea bordered by northwestern Russia. The canal’s northern end reaches this sea.
OGPU: The Soviet state security agency that operated from 1923 to 1934. The OGPU directed the project and supplied its prisoner workforce.
Genrikh Yagoda: A Soviet security chief who helped direct the canal project while leading the OGPU. His agency managed the workforce and promoted the canal as a model achievement.
Solovki prison camp: An early Soviet prison camp established in the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea. The canal’s labor system drew on the camp network in the region.
White Sea Canal: A proposed and partially developed Soviet-era canal route connecting the White Sea with the Barents Sea coast. The proposal offered a different northern route, rather than the canal’s connection to Lake Onega.
