Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is a family of wireless networking technologies based on IEEE 802.11 standards. It connects devices to local networks, which can provide access to the internet.

IEEE 802.11: A family of standards defining wireless local area network communication, including Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi products implement these standards to exchange data over radio.
Wireless local area network: A local computer network that connects devices through wireless links. Wi-Fi is the best-known technology used to build this kind of network.
Wi-Fi 6: The Wi-Fi Alliance name for products based on the IEEE 802.11ax generation of Wi-Fi. Its efficiency features target crowded networks with many connected devices.
Bluetooth: A short-range wireless technology designed chiefly for links among personal devices and peripherals. Bluetooth often replaces Wi-Fi for low-power accessory connections, but serves different networking needs.
Internet access: The ability to connect to and exchange data with the global internet. Wi-Fi made internet access available without a dedicated cable at each device.
Wireless access point: A network device that lets wireless clients connect to a local area network. It provides the radio link between Wi-Fi devices and the wired network.
Radio spectrum: The range of electromagnetic frequencies used for radio communication. Wi-Fi transmits within allocated portions of this spectrum.
Wi-Fi 6E: Wi-Fi 6 operation extended into the 6 GHz band where permitted. The additional band can provide more channels with less legacy-device congestion.
Cellular network: A wide-area wireless communication system organized around cells and operated by mobile carriers. Cellular connectivity covers broader areas than local Wi-Fi and relies on carrier infrastructure.
Digital divide: The gap between people and communities with effective access to digital technologies and those without it. Wi-Fi availability can improve local access, but does not by itself ensure affordable connectivity.
