Wolbachia

Wolbachia is a genus of intracellular bacteria widespread in arthropods. Some strains alter host reproduction or reduce transmission of pathogens such as dengue virus.

Intracellular bacteria: Bacteria that live and reproduce within the cells of another organism. Wolbachia’s dependence on host cells shapes how it spreads and is inherited.
Wolbachia method: A mosquito-control strategy that releases Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes to suppress populations or reduce disease transmission. It applies Wolbachia’s reproductive effects and pathogen interference in public-health programs.
Marshall Hertig: An American entomologist who studied intracellular bacteria in mosquitoes and named Wolbachia. Hertig and S. Burt Wolbach first described the bacterium from a mosquito.
Cardinium: A genus of intracellular bacteria found in arthropods, some of which manipulate host reproduction. It produces reproductive effects resembling Wolbachia’s but belongs to a different bacterial lineage.
Horizontal gene transfer: The movement of genetic material between organisms outside parent-to-offspring inheritance. Wolbachia DNA has entered host genomes, raising questions about transfer and persistence.
Maternal inheritance: Transmission of genetic material or symbionts from a mother to her offspring. Wolbachia typically passes from infected females through their eggs.
Dengue fever: A viral disease transmitted mainly by Aedes mosquitoes, causing fever and sometimes severe complications. Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti can transmit dengue less efficiently.
S. Burt Wolbach: An American pathologist whose research with Marshall Hertig identified the bacterium later named Wolbachia. His name became part of the genus name after the early mosquito studies.
Rickettsia: A genus of intracellular bacteria that includes species responsible for human diseases such as typhus. Unlike most studied Wolbachia, several Rickettsia species are established human pathogens.
Wolbachia–virus interactions: The biological interactions through which Wolbachia changes viral infection or transmission in animal hosts. The mechanisms behind pathogen blocking differ across bacterial strains and host contexts.
