Wolfgang Ketterle

Wolfgang Ketterle is a German-born American physicist whose experiments with ultracold atoms produced Bose–Einstein condensates in dilute gases. He shared the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.

Theodor W. Hänsch: A German physicist whose precision laser spectroscopy and frequency-comb research transformed optical measurement. Hänsch’s laser-cooling research helped shape the techniques Ketterle used on atomic gases.
Laser cooling: Methods that use light and atomic transitions to reduce the motion and temperature of atoms. Ketterle’s experiments began by using laser light to cool atoms before trapping them.

Atom interferometry: A measurement technique that uses the interference of matter waves to sense forces and fields. Ultracold atoms and coherent matter waves provide resources for precision interferometers.
Bose–Einstein statistics: Quantum statistics describing indistinguishable bosons and their possible occupation of shared states. The statistics predict condensation, while Ketterle’s experiments tested it in a real gas.
