Xi'an

Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi province in central China. It served as the capital of several Chinese dynasties and is known for its city walls and nearby Terracotta Army.

Chang'an: Chang'an was the ancient name of Xi'an and the capital of several Chinese dynasties. The city’s ancient identity and imperial history are most often traced through its name as Chang'an.
Terracotta Army: The Terracotta Army is a collection of life-size clay soldiers buried near the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang. This nearby burial complex is Xi'an’s best-known archaeological landmark.
Silk Road: The Silk Road was a network of trade and exchange routes linking East Asia with Central Asia and regions farther west. Chang'an stood at the eastern end of routes that carried goods, religions, and ideas across Eurasia.
Luoyang: Luoyang is a historic city in Henan province that served as a capital for several Chinese dynasties. Like Xi'an, it was a major imperial capital, but its political prominence shifted between dynasties.
Western Zhou: The Western Zhou was an early Chinese dynasty that ruled from the Wei River valley. Its capitals lay near modern Xi'an, establishing the region as an early center of Zhou power.
Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor: The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor is the burial complex built for Qin Shi Huang near modern Xi'an. The Terracotta Army forms part of this vast imperial tomb complex.
Zhang Qian: Zhang Qian was a Han dynasty envoy whose journeys expanded Chinese knowledge of Central Asia. His missions from the Han court helped open contacts associated with the Silk Road.
Beijing: Beijing is the capital of China and has served as an imperial capital under several dynasties. Beijing’s continuing role as the national capital contrasts with Xi'an’s earlier concentration of imperial power.
Qin dynasty: The Qin dynasty unified China in 221 BCE and ruled until 206 BCE. Qin rulers made the region around Xi'an their political base before unification.
Xi'an City Wall: The Xi'an City Wall is a large, well-preserved fortification built during the Ming dynasty. Its surviving circuit makes the historic urban core unusually legible today.
