Xining

Xining is the capital of Qinghai province in northwestern China, situated at the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. It is a regional center linking the plateau with China’s interior.

Qinghai: Qinghai is a province in northwestern China, spanning much of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Xining is Qinghai’s provincial capital and largest urban center.
Qinghai Lake: Qinghai Lake is China’s largest inland saltwater lake, in northeastern Qinghai. The lake anchors the wider region whose political and commercial center is Xining.
Qinghai–Tibet Railway: The Qinghai–Tibet Railway connects Xining with Lhasa across high-altitude terrain. Xining is the railway’s eastern terminus and a gateway to Tibet by rail.
Lanzhou: Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu province in northwestern China, on the Yellow River. It is Xining’s major eastern neighbor and a key connection to China’s interior.

Tang-Tibet relations: Tang-Tibet relations were political and military interactions between the Tang dynasty and the Tibetan Empire. Their frontier struggles shaped the strategic importance of the Xining region.
China National Highway 109: China National Highway 109 runs from Beijing through northwestern China to Tibet. The highway connects Xining with destinations across the plateau.
Lhasa: Lhasa is the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region and a center of Tibetan Buddhism. The rail and road routes from Xining make Lhasa its most prominent plateau counterpart.
Huangshui River: The Huangshui is a river in Qinghai that flows eastward into the Yellow River. Xining developed in the Huangshui valley, a corridor through the surrounding highlands.
Silk Road: The Silk Road was a network of trade routes connecting East Asia with Central Asia and regions farther west. Routes through Qinghai connected Xining’s hinterland to wider Eurasian exchange.
