Yamato-e

Yamato-e is a Japanese painting style that developed in the Heian period, distinguished by native subjects, decorative color, and forms distinct from Chinese-inspired painting.

Emakimono: Japanese handscrolls combine painted scenes and calligraphy in a sequence revealed by unrolling. Handscrolls became a major format for Yamato-e narrative painting.
Genji Monogatari Emaki: A fragmentary twelfth-century illustrated handscroll depicting episodes from The Tale of Genji. It is the foremost surviving example of classical narrative Yamato-e.
Heian period: A period of Japanese history from 794 to 1185, marked by the rise of the imperial court at Heian-kyō. Yamato-e emerged within the courtly culture of this period.
Sumi-e: A Japanese ink-wash painting tradition using brushwork and tonal gradation to depict subjects with economy. Its restrained monochrome approach differs from Yamato-e's decorative color.

Ban Dainagon Ekotoba: A late twelfth-century Japanese illustrated handscroll recounting the Ōtenmon Gate conspiracy. Its animated scenes demonstrate Yamato-e's capacity for historical storytelling.
