Yaoundé

Yaoundé is Cameroon’s capital and second-largest city, situated in the country’s Centre Region. It is the seat of national government and a major administrative, educational, and commercial center.

Presidency of Cameroon: The executive institution headed by Cameroon’s president, whose main offices are in Yaoundé. The city houses the national executive and its central offices.
Eugen Zintgraff: A German explorer who traveled through parts of Cameroon in the late nineteenth century. His expeditions helped establish German knowledge of the region before colonial rule.
Centre Region: An administrative region of Cameroon in the country’s central interior, with Yaoundé as its capital. Yaoundé is the region’s capital and largest urban center.
Etoudi: A district of Yaoundé that contains the official presidential palace. It is the clearest example of the capital’s concentration of executive power.
Douala: Cameroon’s largest city and principal seaport, located on the Atlantic coast. Douala exceeds Yaoundé in population and commercial activity but is not the capital.
National Assembly of Cameroon: Cameroon’s lower house of Parliament, responsible for passing laws and overseeing government. Its seat in Yaoundé makes the city the center of national legislative activity.
German Kamerun: The German colony that governed Cameroon from 1884 until the First World War. German colonial administration established Yaoundé as a station in the interior.
Mfoundi: A department of Cameroon’s Centre Region that contains the city of Yaoundé. The department provides the main administrative frame for the urban area.
Briqueterie: A densely populated neighborhood in Yaoundé known for its markets and strong Muslim community. Its street commerce and community life contrast with the formal government district.
Garoua: A major city in northern Cameroon and the capital of the North Region. Its regional role contrasts with Yaoundé’s national administrative reach.
