Yasujirō Ozu

Yasujirō Ozu was a Japanese film director and screenwriter whose formally restrained films portrayed family life and social change. His best-known works include Tokyo Story and Late Spring.

Tokyo Story: A 1953 Japanese film by Yasujirō Ozu about an elderly couple visiting their grown children in postwar Tokyo. Its quiet family visit distills Ozu’s attention to generational distance and everyday loss.
Tatami shot: A low camera position associated with Japanese cinema, roughly matching the viewpoint of someone seated on a tatami mat. Ozu’s low, stable framing often places domestic scenes near this seated viewpoint.
