Yavneh

Yavneh is an ancient town in coastal Israel associated with rabbinic activity after the Romans destroyed the Second Temple in 70 CE.

Destruction of the Second Temple: Roman forces destroyed the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE during the First Jewish–Roman War. The destruction prompted the shift in Jewish religious life associated with Yavneh.
Johanan ben Zakkai: A first-century Jewish sage traditionally credited with securing permission to establish a center of Torah study at Yavneh. Later accounts place his leadership at the beginning of Yavneh’s rabbinic activity.
Jabneh: An alternate English name for Yavneh, derived from forms used in ancient sources. Older scholarship often uses this spelling for the same ancient town.
