Yellow fever vaccine

A live attenuated vaccine that protects against yellow fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease. Most doses use the 17D strain, developed from the Asibi virus.

17D vaccine: A live attenuated yellow fever vaccine strain used in vaccines worldwide. This strain is the basis of most yellow fever vaccine formulations.
Asibi virus: A yellow fever virus isolated from a Ghanaian patient in 1927 that became the ancestor of the 17D vaccine strain. Repeated passage of this isolate produced the vaccine’s 17D lineage.
International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis: A document recognized under the International Health Regulations to certify specified vaccinations, including yellow fever vaccination. Some countries require proof of vaccination for travelers arriving from risk areas.
Japanese encephalitis vaccine: A vaccine that protects against Japanese encephalitis, a mosquito-borne viral disease. It targets another mosquito-borne virus but uses several vaccine platforms.
Live attenuated vaccine: A vaccine made from a weakened pathogen that can replicate but usually does not cause disease in healthy people. The vaccine’s weakened virus replicates briefly to provoke immunity.
Max Theiler: A South African-born virologist who developed the 17D yellow fever vaccine and received the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Theiler led the laboratory work that produced the attenuated strain.
Yellow fever belt: The tropical regions of Africa and South America where yellow fever transmission occurs. Routine vaccination is recommended in many countries within these endemic regions.
Dengue vaccine: A vaccine designed to reduce the risk of dengue disease caused by dengue viruses. Dengue vaccination involves different products and more complex serotype-specific considerations.
Neutralizing antibody: An antibody that binds a pathogen and blocks it from infecting cells. Neutralizing antibodies are a principal measure of protection after vaccination.
Walter Reed: A U.S. Army physician whose commission established mosquito transmission of yellow fever and helped identify its viral cause. Earlier proof of transmission clarified the disease the vaccine needed to prevent.
