Knowra Yorkshire Yorkshire Yorkshire is a historic county in northern England, traditionally divided into the North, East, and West Ridings. Its boundaries and administrative status have changed, but it remains a strong regional identity.
North Riding of Yorkshire : The northern division of historic Yorkshire, including areas around York, the coast, and the North York Moors. Its territory formed one of the three traditional divisions of the county.
Eboracum : The Roman name for the settlement that became York, a major military and provincial center in Roman Britain. Roman York became the central place in the territory later known as Yorkshire.
Industrial Revolution : The transition to mechanized manufacturing and new energy systems that began in Britain in the eighteenth century. Coal, textiles, and engineering turned parts of Yorkshire into major industrial centers.
Yorkshire Day : An annual observance held on 1 August to celebrate Yorkshire and its heritage. The date connects regional celebration with the historic abolition of the Ridings’ separate jurisdictions.
East Riding of Yorkshire : The eastern division of historic Yorkshire, centered on the lowlands around the Humber and the North Sea coast. It was Yorkshire’s eastern traditional division and retains a modern administrative successor.
Kingdom of Deira : An early medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom in northern England, centered broadly on the region between the Humber and Tees. Deira’s territory overlapped much of the area that became Yorkshire.
Textile industry in Yorkshire : The production of woollen and worsted cloth that became a defining industry in parts of Yorkshire. Textile manufacturing shaped the economy and urban growth of the West Riding.
Yorkshire pudding : A baked batter dish traditionally served with roast meat and gravy, especially associated with Yorkshire. Its name makes it one of the county’s most widely recognized cultural emblems.
West Riding of Yorkshire : The largest traditional division of Yorkshire, covering much of the county’s western and southern interior. Its size and industrial cities made it the most populous Riding.
Kingdom of Northumbria : An early medieval kingdom that at its height ruled much of northern England and southeastern Scotland. Yorkshire later formed a major southern part of Northumbria.
