Yugoslav Wars

The Yugoslav Wars were armed conflicts accompanying the breakup of Yugoslavia during the 1990s, fought chiefly in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.

Breakup of Yugoslavia: The dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia into independent states during the late 1980s and 1990s. The wars accompanied the federation’s disintegration and disputes over its successor states.
Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia: A socialist federation of six republics and two autonomous provinces that existed from 1945 to 1992. Its federal structure became the arena for disputes over sovereignty after central authority weakened.
Siege of Sarajevo: A siege of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital by Bosnian Serb forces from 1992 to 1996. The prolonged shelling and sniper attacks became a defining civilian experience of the Bosnian War.
Franjo Tuđman: A Croatian historian and politician who led Croatia as president from 1990 to 1999. His government directed Croatia’s independence and wartime policies.
Yugoslav Wars and World War II in Yugoslavia: The occupation, resistance, and civil conflict in Yugoslavia during the Second World War. Both periods involved mass violence and competing national projects, but arose in different political settings.
Ten-Day War: A brief 1991 conflict between Slovenian forces and the Yugoslav People’s Army after Slovenia declared independence. It was the first armed conflict of Yugoslavia’s breakup.
Josip Broz Tito: The communist leader of Yugoslavia from 1945 until his death in 1980. His death removed the federation’s dominant leader before its political crisis deepened.

Radovan Karadžić: A Bosnian Serb political leader convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes by the ICTY. His leadership connected Bosnian Serb political aims to criminal campaigns documented in court.
Ethnic cleansing: The deliberate removal of an ethnic or religious population from a territory through force, intimidation, or other coercion. The term describes a recurring wartime policy but is not itself a distinct legal crime.
