Zagwe dynasty

The Zagwe dynasty was a medieval Ethiopian ruling house that governed before the Solomonic restoration of 1270. It is especially associated with the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.

Agaw people: An ethnolinguistic group indigenous to northern Ethiopia and Eritrea, speaking languages of the Cushitic family. The Zagwe ruling house is traditionally associated with Agaw origins.
Gebre Mesqel Lalibela: A Zagwe king traditionally credited with commissioning the rock-hewn churches at Lalibela. His reign became the dynasty’s most enduring association in Ethiopian memory.
