Zambezi River

Africa’s fourth-longest river flows through or along six countries before reaching the Indian Ocean. Its basin links diverse ecosystems, hydropower systems, and communities.

Zambezi Basin: The land drained by the Zambezi River and its tributaries across southern Africa. Its watershed extends across several countries and defines the river’s wider geography.
Zambezi River Authority: A joint Zambia–Zimbabwe organization responsible for managing the Zambezi around Lake Kariba. It coordinates shared operation of the Kariba reservoir and dam.
Lake Kariba: A large reservoir on the Zambezi behind Kariba Dam, shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe. Its creation flooded the river valley and transformed local settlement and ecology.
Limpopo River: A southern African river that flows east to the Indian Ocean south of the Zambezi basin. Its neighboring basin drains a different part of southern Africa into the same ocean.
Victoria Falls: A broad waterfall on the Zambezi River at the Zambia–Zimbabwe border. The river plunges over this escarpment before continuing through the middle Zambezi gorge.
Kariba Hydroelectric Power Station: A power station at Kariba Dam that generates electricity from the Zambezi’s flow. Its output makes river levels and reservoir management matters of regional importance.
Operation Noah: A 1958–1964 wildlife rescue operation that moved animals from the rising waters of Lake Kariba. The dam’s reservoir inundated habitats, prompting a major wildlife relocation effort.
Okavango River: A southern African river that ends in the inland Okavango Delta rather than reaching the sea. Its inland termination contrasts with the Zambezi’s ocean-bound course.
Kariba Dam: A hydroelectric dam across the Zambezi River that created Lake Kariba. The dam regulates flow and generates power on the river’s Zambia–Zimbabwe reach.
Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Power Station: A hydroelectric power station at Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique. It converts the lower Zambezi’s stored water into electricity for Mozambique and neighboring markets.
