Zilog Z80

The Zilog Z80 is an eight-bit microprocessor introduced in 1976. Its compatibility with Intel 8080 software and integrated hardware features helped make it widely used in early computers and electronic devices.

Z80 instruction set: The operations and encodings the Z80 processor can execute. Its instructions extend the Intel 8080 set with additional registers and operations.
Federico Faggin: An Italian-American physicist and engineer who led development of the Intel 8080 and co-founded Zilog. He co-founded Zilog after leading the earlier processor whose software the Z80 supported.
TRS-80: A line of personal computers introduced by Tandy in 1977, based on the Z80. The Model I brought the Z80 to a large market of home and school computer users.
Intel 8085: An eight-bit Intel microprocessor introduced in 1976 as a more integrated successor to the 8080. It competed in the same era while integrating functions that often required external 8080-family chips.
CP/M: An operating system for early microcomputers, widely used on systems based on the Intel 8080 and Z80. Z80 compatibility let many systems run software written for CP/M’s 8080 environment.
Z80 registers: The Z80’s fast internal storage locations, including its general-purpose and index registers. The alternate register set and index registers distinguish its programming model.
Masatoshi Shima: A Japanese electronics engineer who worked on Intel microprocessors and later joined Zilog. He helped design the Z80 after working with Faggin on the Intel 8080.
ZX Spectrum: A British home computer introduced by Sinclair Research in 1982, built around a Z80 processor. Its inexpensive design made the Z80 central to a widely used home computer.
MOS Technology 6502: An eight-bit microprocessor introduced in 1975 and used in computers and game consoles. Its low cost and different register design made it a major alternative in personal computers.
Microsoft BASIC: A family of BASIC interpreters and compilers developed by Microsoft for numerous computer platforms. Z80-based computers helped make Microsoft BASIC common in early home computing.
