Zinc

Zinc is a bluish-white metallic chemical element with atomic number 30. It is used in alloys, batteries, and corrosion-resistant coatings, and is an essential trace element in living organisms.

Galvanization: A process that applies a protective zinc coating to iron or steel. Zinc protects steel by corroding preferentially when the coating is damaged.
Zinc corrosion: The electrochemical deterioration of zinc through reactions with its environment. Corrosion consumes zinc and underlies its sacrificial protection of iron.
Chemical element: A pure substance defined by atoms with the same number of protons. Zinc is the element defined by 30 protons in each nucleus.
Andreas Sigismund Marggraf: An eighteenth-century German chemist who isolated zinc metal in 1746. Marggraf’s isolation helped establish zinc as a distinct metal.
Zinc deficiency: A state in which the body lacks enough zinc for normal physiological function. Too little zinc disrupts growth, immunity, and wound healing.
Brass: A copper–zinc alloy whose composition determines its color, strength, and workability. Brass is zinc’s best-known alloy, used in hardware, instruments, and fittings.
Sacrificial anode: A more reactive metal electrically connected to protect another metal from corrosion. Zinc serves as the anode that corrodes instead of the protected structure.
Atomic number: The number of protons in an atom’s nucleus, which identifies its element. Zinc’s atomic number is 30.
Paracelsus: A Renaissance physician and alchemist associated with early European descriptions of zinc. His writings contain early discussion of zinc and its compounds.
Zinc toxicity: Harmful effects caused by excessive zinc exposure or intake. Zinc is essential, but excess can impair copper absorption and cause illness.
