Afsluitdijk

The Afsluitdijk is a Dutch dam and causeway completed in 1932, separating the former Zuiderzee from the Wadden Sea and creating the freshwater IJsselmeer.

Stevin Sluices: A complex of sluices at Den Oever that drains water from the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea. They release excess IJsselmeer water through the dike without opening it to tidal exchange.
Zuiderzee Works: A Dutch program of dams and land reclamation that reshaped the former Zuiderzee and created new polders. The Afsluitdijk was the program’s pivotal first major construction.
Afsluitdijk causeway: The road-and-cycle route carried along the Afsluitdijk between North Holland and Friesland. The dam also functions as a major transport link across the former Zuiderzee.
Zuiderzee: A former shallow tidal inlet of the North Sea in the Netherlands, largely enclosed by the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Its conversion into the IJsselmeer is the dam’s defining geographic consequence.
Sea-level rise: The long-term increase in average global sea level, driven mainly by ocean warming and land-ice loss. Higher sea levels can narrow the windows when gravity drainage through the dike is possible.
Lorentz Sluices: A complex of sluices near Kornwerderzand that discharges IJsselmeer water into the Wadden Sea. They provide the dike’s second major outlet for controlled freshwater discharge.
Cornelis Lely: A Dutch engineer and politician whose plans for enclosing and reclaiming the Zuiderzee shaped national water policy. His decades-long advocacy supplied the dam’s central design and political rationale.
Noordoostpolder: A reclaimed polder in Flevoland, drained from the former Zuiderzee and enclosed by dikes. The Afsluitdijk made later reclamation projects in the former Zuiderzee possible.
Zuiderzee fisheries: The fishing economies and communities once sustained by the Zuiderzee’s brackish tidal waters. Closing the inlet ended the sea’s traditional fishery and forced coastal communities to adapt.
Climate adaptation in the Netherlands: Dutch policies and infrastructure changes intended to manage climate-driven risks such as flooding, drought, and heat. Future Afsluitdijk upgrades must account for changing water levels and extreme weather.
