Al-Andalus

Al-Andalus was the parts of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Muslim rulers from the conquest beginning in 711 until Granada fell in 1492. Its borders and political forms changed repeatedly over those centuries.

Umayyad conquest of Hispania: The eighth-century military conquest that established Muslim rule across much of the Iberian Peninsula. Its campaigns beginning in 711 created the first territories known as Al-Andalus.
Taifa kingdoms: Independent Muslim-ruled states that emerged in Iberia after the Córdoba caliphate fragmented in 1031. Their rival courts replaced centralized caliphal authority across much of Al-Andalus.
Córdoba: A city in southern Spain that served as the capital of several major Muslim states in Iberia. As the principal capital, Córdoba anchored Andalusi administration and political culture.
House of Wisdom: A scholarly institution associated with Abbasid Baghdad, known for translation and the study of sciences. It offers a comparison for the distinct scholarly networks that flourished in Córdoba.
Fall of Granada: The 1492 surrender of Granada to the Catholic Monarchs, ending Muslim political rule in Iberia. It marks the conventional endpoint of Al-Andalus as a governed territory.
Battle of Guadalete: An 8th-century battle in which Umayyad forces defeated the Visigothic king Roderic. The defeat helped open the peninsula to the conquest that founded Al-Andalus.
Almoravid dynasty: A North African Berber dynasty that ruled parts of Iberia and the Maghreb in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Almoravids intervened in Iberia and reunified many taifa territories under their rule.
Alhambra: A palace and fortress complex in Granada built and expanded under Nasrid rulers. Its architecture embodies the courtly power of Al-Andalus’s final ruling dynasty.
Maimonides: A Jewish philosopher, legal scholar, and physician born in Córdoba in 1138. His life connects Andalusi Jewish intellectual culture with later communities across the Mediterranean.
Expulsion of the Moriscos: The forced removal of baptized Muslims and their descendants from Spain, carried out between 1609 and 1614. It followed the conquest of Al-Andalus by centuries and targeted communities shaped by its legacy.
