Alfred the Great

Alfred the Great was king of Wessex from 871 to 899. He defended his kingdom against Viking invasions and promoted learning, religious life, and legal reform.

Battle of Edington: A battle fought in 878 in which Alfred’s forces defeated the Viking army led by Guthrum. This victory halted Guthrum’s advance and enabled Alfred to negotiate from strength.
Burhs: Fortified settlements in Anglo-Saxon England that served as defensive strongholds and administrative centers. Alfred’s network of burhs gave Wessex defended bases against Viking armies.
Wessex: An Anglo-Saxon kingdom in southwestern England that became the leading English power under Alfred and his successors. It was the kingdom Alfred ruled and organized against Viking expansion.
Guthrum: A Viking leader who fought Alfred and later accepted baptism and ruled an area of eastern England. His conflict and settlement with Alfred turned a military rival into a treaty partner.
Alfredian translation programme: A royal initiative to translate selected Latin works into Old English during Alfred’s reign. It turned Alfred’s support for learning into a program of vernacular scholarship.
Treaty of Alfred and Guthrum: An agreement defining a boundary between the territories of Alfred and the Viking ruler Guthrum and setting terms for relations between them. The treaty formalized a political settlement after Alfred’s victory over Guthrum.
fyrd: The military levy of Anglo-Saxon England, raised from local communities for a ruler’s service. A more sustainable rotation of military service helped keep forces available for defense.
Heptarchy: A conventional name for the principal Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of early medieval England. The older landscape of competing kingdoms shaped Wessex’s political position.
Æthelflæd: Alfred’s daughter, who ruled the Mercians and led campaigns against Viking-held territories. She extended the defensive and political work of Alfred’s family after his death.
Doom book: A collection of laws issued by an Anglo-Saxon king, often called a law code. Alfred’s law code gathered earlier rules and presented kingship as responsible for justice.
