Aralkum Desert

The Aralkum is a desert forming on the exposed seabed of the former Aral Sea in Central Asia, after the sea’s rapid shrinkage.

Aral Sea: An endorheic lake in Central Asia that began shrinking sharply in the second half of the twentieth century. Its receding shoreline exposed the seabed that became the Aralkum.
Salt-dust storms: Wind-driven events that lift salt and fine particles from dry, exposed surfaces into the atmosphere. Storms carry material from the Aralkum across surrounding regions.
Saxaul: A salt- and drought-tolerant shrub or small tree native to arid regions of Central Asia. Saxaul planting is used to stabilize parts of the exposed seabed.
Desertification: Land degradation in drylands in which climatic variation and human activity reduce biological productivity. The Aralkum raises questions about how newly exposed seabed changes into functioning dryland.
Soviet irrigation: Large-scale irrigation projects developed in the Soviet Union to expand water-intensive agriculture, especially cotton cultivation in Central Asia. Diversions from the rivers feeding the Aral Sea accelerated its retreat.
Aeolian processes: The erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment by wind. Wind reshapes the exposed seabed and redistributes its salts and dust.
Afforestation: The establishment of forest or tree cover on land that was not recently forested. Planting vegetation on the Aralkum aims to reduce wind erosion.
Climate change in Central Asia: Long-term changes in temperature and precipitation patterns across Central Asia. Regional climate trends may alter dust emissions and vegetation establishment.
Amu Darya: A major Central Asian river that flows toward the former southern Aral Sea basin. Its waters were diverted for irrigation, reducing inflow to the sea.
Soil salinization: The accumulation of soluble salts in soil to levels that impair plant growth. Salt-bearing dust from the desert can worsen salinity on nearby farmland.
