Babylonian Talmud

The Babylonian Talmud is a late-antique rabbinic compilation of Mishnah and Gemara, combining legal analysis, debate, interpretation, stories, and other teachings. It became the central textual authority of Rabbinic Judaism.

Mishnah: A concise Hebrew compilation of rabbinic legal teachings redacted around the beginning of the third century. It is the legal core around which the Babylonian Talmud's discussions are organized.
Sugya: A Talmudic unit of discussion that examines a question through sources, objections, and resolutions. The sugya is the basic shape of much sustained argument in the Gemara.
Sasanian Empire: A Persian empire that ruled from 224 to 651 CE and encompassed the principal centers of Babylonian Jewish scholarship. Its political world formed the setting for the academies and communities behind the compilation.
Talmud study: The close study of Talmudic passages through reading, discussion, and analysis of their arguments and sources. This practice has transmitted the text and trained generations in its methods of reasoning.
Gemara: Rabbinic analysis and discussion of the Mishnah, preserved in the two Talmuds. Its arguments and interpretations form the Talmud's extensive second layer.
Stammaim: Anonymous late antique editors and interpreters whose contributions help shape the Talmud's final argumentative form. Their framing and connective reasoning link earlier rabbinic statements into extended discussions.
Babylonia: An ancient region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, home to major Jewish communities in late antiquity. The Talmud took shape among Jewish communities in this region.
Daf Yomi: A program of studying one folio of the Babylonian Talmud each day, completing the cycle in about seven and a half years. It provides a widely practiced schedule for reading the entire Babylonian Talmud.
Tannaim: Early rabbinic sages whose teachings are chiefly associated with the Mishnah and related traditions. Their rulings and sayings supply much of the material later debated in the Talmud.
Baraita: A tannaitic teaching not included in the Mishnah, preserved in other rabbinic sources. Baraitot enter discussions as external traditions that can support or challenge a claim.
