Belgium

Belgium is a sovereign country in western Europe, bordered by France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the North Sea. Its federal system accommodates Dutch-, French-, and German-speaking communities.

Flemish Region: The northern Belgian region where Dutch is the official language. It is one of Belgium’s three regions and contains most of its Dutch-speaking population.
Belgian Revolution: The 1830 uprising that ended Dutch rule in Belgium and led to an independent state. It initiated the separation that created Belgium as a sovereign country.
Brussels: Belgium’s capital and the principal seat of several European Union institutions. The capital hosts federal institutions and major centers of European decision-making.
Netherlands: A country in northwestern Europe bordering Belgium and Germany. The two countries share a border and history but developed separate states after 1830.
Walloon Region: The southern Belgian region, where French is dominant and German is official in a small eastern area. Its regional government handles powers distinct from those of Flanders and Brussels.
Treaty of London (1839): The treaty by which European powers recognized Belgium’s independence and permanent neutrality. It secured international recognition of the state formed after the revolution.
European Union: A political and economic union of European countries with shared institutions and policies. Belgium is a founding member, and Brussels hosts major EU institutions.
Luxembourg: A small landlocked country in western Europe bordering Belgium, France, and Germany. It shares Belgium’s Benelux ties while remaining a distinct, smaller sovereign state.
Brussels-Capital Region: A bilingual region comprising the city of Brussels and surrounding municipalities. It is a separate region, distinct from the Flemish and Walloon regions surrounding it.
Leopold I of Belgium: Belgium’s first king, who reigned from 1831 to 1865. His accession established the monarchy chosen for the newly independent country.
