Bessarabia

Bessarabia is a historical region between the Prut and Dniester rivers, now divided chiefly between Moldova and Ukraine. Its borders and political status changed repeatedly under Ottoman, Russian, Romanian, and Soviet rule.

Principality of Moldavia: A medieval and early modern principality centered in the lands of present-day Moldova and eastern Romania. Bessarabia formed part of Moldavia before the Russian Empire annexed its eastern portion.
Russian Empire: A state ruled by Russian emperors from 1721 until the revolutions of 1917. It governed Bessarabia from 1812 until the upheavals of the First World War.
Alexander I of Russia: Russian emperor from 1801 to 1825, whose reign included the Napoleonic Wars and territorial expansion. His empire annexed Bessarabia from the Ottoman sphere in 1812.
Romanian nationalism: A political movement promoting the cultural or political unity of Romanians and Romanian-speaking populations. It framed Bessarabia’s 1918 union with Romania as national reunification.
Bessarabian Germans: A German-speaking community established in Bessarabia during the Russian imperial period, especially in the nineteenth century. Their settlement reflected Russian colonization policies, and most were resettled after the Soviet annexation.
Ottoman Empire: A multinational empire centered in Anatolia that ruled lands across southeastern Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. Ottoman suzerainty over Moldavia shaped the region before Russia expanded westward.
Bessarabian Governorate: An administrative province of the Russian Empire established in 1812 across much of Bessarabia. Its imperial administration shaped local institutions and boundaries during Russian rule.
Ion Inculeț: A Bessarabian politician who chaired the regional legislature, the Sfatul Țării, in 1917–1918. He presided over the assembly that declared Bessarabia’s union with Romania.
Moldovenism: A political and cultural ideology asserting a distinct Moldovan national identity, often differentiated from Romanian identity. It contrasts with Romanian national claims that Bessarabians are part of a single Romanian nation.
Holodomor: The famine of 1932–1933 in Soviet Ukraine, caused by state policies and resulting in millions of deaths. The famine and Soviet policies affected communities in Bessarabia’s eastern borderlands.
