Byzantine themes

Byzantine themes were provincial districts that combined civil administration with military command. Their organization changed over time, shaping how the empire governed territory and mobilized troops.

Strategos: A Byzantine general or governor, especially the commander appointed over a theme. The strategos typically led a theme’s troops and exercised its provincial authority.
Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628: A devastating conflict between the Byzantine and Sasanian empires that ended with Byzantine victory in 628. The war exhausted imperial resources and preceded the crises that reshaped Byzantine provincial defense.
Byzantine Empire: The medieval continuation of the Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople and lasting until 1453. Themes were a provincial institution of this empire, not a separate state.
Anatolikon Theme: A major Byzantine theme in central Anatolia, associated with the army formerly commanded by the magister militum per Orientem. It became one of the empire’s largest and most influential land themes.
